JAKARTA, 28 August 2008 - At least 20 new basins of oil and gas were found, mostly located in eastern part of Indonesia. The country now has 87 basins in with 67 of them on a map previously released in 1985, according to local media on Thursday. Geological experts have discovered at least 20 new basins which are similar in size as those listed in the previous maps, the Indonesian Business daily quoted secretary general of Indonesian geologist (IAGI) Ridwan Djamaludin as saying.

"Hopefully, the new mapping of basins can be used by the government and companies for references before an exploration on gas and oil," he said. Indonesia has currently developed 17 basins which may be potential for the next phase of oil and gas production, he said, adding "another 33 basins are in an exploration level." Besides eastern Indonesia, some other basins are located in Sumatra and Java as well.
