JAKARTA, 26 August 2008 - A powerful shallow quake with magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter Scale rocked West Java province of Indonesia on Tuesday, with a potential for a tsunami, the Indonesian Meteorology Agency said. The quake was felt up nearby Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, with intensity of 2 to 3 MMI (modified mercally intensity), an official of the agency, Hidayanti, said.
The quake struck at 10:07 a.m. (0307 GMT) with epicenter at 125 kilometers northwest of Ujungkulon in West Java province and 20 kilometers under the seabed, she said. A tsunami warning was issued however no tsunami eventually materialized.
