JAKARTA, 05 August 2008 - The Minister of Research and Technology, Kusmayanto Kadiman, has said that the government is planning on building a nuclear power plant on the northern shore of Banten province. Kadiman said that the power plant was to be constructed between 2015 and 2020 and should have a capacity of 1.000 Megawatt. The total cost of the project is some two billion euro.

The reason why the northern shore of the Banten province is chosen is because the area has a number of natural resources which will be needed to get a nuclear power plant going. The area is also said to have proper safety standards for such a power plant; there are no big earthquakes or tsunami's in recorded history. The rector of the Technological Institute of Bandung (ITB) however said that there was no exact location for the power plant yet.

At this moment, the head of the Nuclear Power Council (Batan), Hudi Hastowo, is arranging locations for the construction of six nuclear power plants which should contribute their power to the Java-Bali power grid. Hastowo said that the plants would have a production capacity of 1.000 Megawatt, which is seen as small. They would need six to 30 tonnes of uranium every year to fully supply the Java-Bali grid.
