BEKASI, 25 July 2008 - The total cost of a fence around the house of the regent of Bekasi is valued at one billion Rupiah (70.000 euro) in an added budget in the regional budget for 2008. The regional government has also added some 1.5 billion Rupiah (105.000 euro) for just dressing up the house of the regent and some other buildings near it, stated in one permit.
In the added budget for 2008 it only states that the total cost of the construction of the fence and the near environment of the house of the regent is 2.5 billion Rupiah. There is no clarification for the total amount. The secretary of the district of Bekasi, Herry Koesairi, said that he was not involved in the process of making the budget, "because he was out of town".
The head of the regional House of Representatives, Samsul Falah, has said that constructing a fence of 1 billion Rupiah for the regent's safety. His house is just behind the main building of the regional government and borders to a residential zone which is seen as less safe. According to Samsul, the construction of the fence it to be tendered. If there are irregularities, there will be an audit. "One billion for that fence is not too much," said Samsul.
Sarbini, the head of a work group in the House of Representatives said that there were other things the money could be spent on. There are still some 127.000 people living below the poverty line for example. "Too much, the people still need much help."
