5.9 magnitude earthquake south of Java felt by residents

YOGYAKARTA, 20 July 2008 - A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's main island of Java on Sunday, but there was no threat of a tsunami and no immediate reports of damage, geologists said. The quake hit at 13.11 local time, (06:11 GMT), 135 kilometers south-east of Wonogiri in Central Java, the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency said via text message.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, it said. 'There's no reports of damage so far', agency geologist Setiono told, adding that the quake was felt only moderately in several towns in Central Java. Geologists of the USGS put the earthquake at a 5.3 magnitude quake, which is significantly lower than the figure from the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Institute.
