JAKARTA, 17 July 2008 - A court official with the Bali court has said that the final appeal by the three Islamic militants that are convicted over the 2002 Bali bombings has been rejected, bringing them closer to being executed. The head of the court, Nyoman Gede Wirya, said that the men now formally had to ask the president for clemency if they want to avoid the death penalty.
He says he received a letter from the Supreme Court stating it had dismissed their appeal for a last review. Earlier on in the process the three convicts have already said that they will not ask for clemency because they would die to become martyrs. The three men were convicted in 2003 of planning and carrying out the blasts, which killed 202 people, most of them tourists.
