JAKARTA, 10 May 2008 - ndonesia's police have been told to be be on alert for any signs of unrest over fuel prices ahead of an expected price hike. The government is believed to be considering a fuel price rise of between 20 and 30 percent, a move that is sure to fan inflation at a time of already high food prices.

There have been almost daily protests in many parts of the country since the government announced plans to raise subsidised fuel prices. Indonesia last raised its fuel price by 126 percent in 2005, sparking widespread street protests. Police will also look out for "speculators" who might be tempted to hoard fuel.
