JAKARTA, 25 April 2008 - The Indonesian government will officially ban the Ahmadiyah sect next week, following the edict by the country's Ulema Council and a decision made by the Attorney General Office to outlaw the sect, Indonesian Attorney General Hendarman Supandji said on Friday. The Ahmadi movement was prohibited from performing its belief because of deviating from the true Islamic teaching.
The attorney general said that a joint decision by the Attorney General Office, the Home Affairs Ministry and the Religion Ministry would be issued next week. "Now the decision is being prepared. It is possibly issued next week," Supandji told reporters at the Attorney General Office. He said that the policy aimed at providing a strong legal ground for the country to prohibit the sect from carrying out its activities.
The restriction on the sect was opposed by its followers in Indonesia, which triggered vandalism on its assets and personnel in some places in Indonesia, such as in the province of West Java.
