JAKARTA, 09 November 2007 - President Yudhoyono said that the death sentence for three Islamic militants, which are currently on death row for their part in the 2002 Bali bombings, must be carried out. With this he clearly indicates that there is no way of granting them clemency. Imam Samudra, Amrozi and Ali Gufron face execution by a firing squad after the Supreme Court rejected their final appeal. The three also refused to seek clemency from the president, saying that they want to die as martyrs.
"The perpetrators have been sentenced to death and according to our law, that must be implemented," told Yudhoyono in a television interview aired on Al Jazeerah yesterday. "How, when it will be carried out very much depends on a set of procedures to be followed," he said. Yudhoyono added that Indonesia was very serious in fighting terrorism, noting that the worlds most populous Muslim nation had already captured numerous militants.
"Of course we have not won the war against terrorism but we have won many battles. We will continue," he said.
