BANDUNG, 04 August 2007 - Disaster authorities in Indonesia have raised the alert level of the Mount Papandayan volcano in the province of West Java after volcanic activity recorded in recent weeks shows signs of an imminent eruption. The Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency said that there were continuous minor tremors near the volcano and that temperatures around the volcano were rising as well.
"The volcano visibly spewed white thick smoke as high as 50 meters," according to an official of the disaster agency. He also advised residents living on the slopes of the volcano to maintain a distance of at least one kilometer from the crater. "When the volcanic activities are getting tense, we will raise the alert status to its highest," he said. The 2,665 meter volcano's last eruption was on November 21, 2002.
