NUSA DUA, 28 July 2007 - Minister of Transportation Jusman Syafei Jamal said that observers from the European Union will take a direct look at the condition of Indonesian airlines in connection with it's ban on airplanes from Indonesia from flying to it's airspace. "They will send a team to Indonesia but they also asked us to send them first five kinds of documents on Indonesia`s aviation," the minister said here on Saturday.
He told that the documents they asked for included progress reports on the aviation safety, schedules on aviation improvement programs and reports on the latest condition of companies. "We have sent the documents on Friday. They said they would send the team and fix the date of its visit after assessing the documents. We hope they will arrive early in August," the minister said.
He told that the observation team from the EU will be visiting Indonesia in order to overcome the current flight ban. Jusman acknowledged that the EU had imposed the ban due to slow response of the directorate general to the warning letter that was sent by the EU in May. The visit of the team from Europe is on request of Indonesia.
Some parties see the ban to be a heavy blow to the Indonesian airline companies and tourism sector. "Some four million European tourists visit Indonesia every year while the number of Indonesians visiting the continent is more than that," Gustanto M Hum, chairman of the Tourism Study Program of the University of North Sumatra, said recently.
