JAKARTA, 27 July 2007 - Islamic terrorists blamed for a number of deadly suicide bombings in Indonesia have failed to further their 'cause of hatred' in the country, according to president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. He made the statement at the opening of an eye-clinic on the island of Bali, a gift from Australia to victims of the 2002 nightclub bombings which killed 202, among them 88 Australians.

"Today, the terrorists who are responsible for such monstrous crimes have been captured, tried and put behind bars," said the president at a speech attended by Australian Prime Minister John Howard. "They have utterly failed in their misguided cause of hatred."

Members of militant network Jemaah Islamiyah are blamed for a string of bombings throughout 2002 to 2005. Police have arrested scores of people related to these blasts, but analysts say more attacks remain likely. Howard said that the Australia-Bali Memorial Eye Center, which is set up to restore sight for peole who suffer from cataract blindness free of charge, was dedicated to the victims of the 2002 bombings..

It was also an "expression of gratitude from the people in Australia to the Balinese people for their kindness which they showed to our fellow countrymen and women in October 2002," he told.
