JAKARTA, 24 July 2007 - Twenty people have been killed and 52 others were still missing after a landslide and flood hit areas in the province of Central Sulawesi on Sunday evening, the Disaster Management Agency told Tuesday. The disaster in Batu Bare and Tomboyali districts in the regency of Morowali had destroyed over one hundred houses, including transport facilities, according to officials.

"Twenty bodies have been found and the other 52 still are missing," an official of the agency Giri Trigondo. The official told that the rescue mission for those still missing was continuing. Separately the head of the Crisis Management Center of the Health Ministry , Rustam Pakaya said that poor weather at the scene and a lack of transport facilities hampers delivering aid from outside. "The weather is poor and many bridges are obstructed".

Pakaya told that rainfall still continued in the regency. Water still submerged houses in several villages. "More than two-meter-high water inundated 16 villages. And 20,201 people were on the brink of danger," he said. The high water hampered movement of aid to the thousands of residents according to Pakaya. "The access to the villages is cut off. The medical team visits the residents by bamboo raft," he said.
