JAKARTA, 13 July 2007 - The Gamkonora volcano on the island of Halmahera in eastern Indonesia is again shooting out flaming rocks after a period of relative quiet. The volcano came to life last week when it emitted towering columns of ash and smoke, but it has been inactive for almost a day now.
Officials say that clouds of smoke and ash have become larger again, obscuring the volcano. The alert status for the volcano remains at the highest, and officials fear that the volcano is building up momentum for an even bigger eruption. More than 12,000 people have been evacuated from the area so far. Many of them are said to suffer from respiratory problems.
