JAKARTA, 12 June 2007 - Thousands of people demonstrated in the province of central Java today to protest the government plan to build a nuclear power plant in the city of Kudus. Local residents as well as environment activists hit the streets and public places in Kudus, 400 kilometers east of Jakarta. They protest the construction of the power plant which is to be started in 2016.
Footage on national television showed hundreds of people in the streets near the location of the local administration. The demonstrators caused big traffic jams. People carried banners that read "say no to nuclear." Mochammad Asad, the coordinator of todays demonstration told on local television that residents had planned a mass rally to Jakarta if the calls for cancellation of the project were not met.
"Nuclear power is not safe for people," he said, mentioning tragedies in Tokaimura, Japan, Chernobyl in ex-Soviet Union, Three Miles Island in the United States, and Port Hope in Canada. The regent of Kudus, Muhammad Tamzil, also joined the protest. The Indonesian government is currently planning the construction of four nuclear power plants, each with a capacity of 1,000 Megawatts.
