JAKARTA, 11 May 2007 - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a program to promote Indonesian provinces in other countries. The program, named 'Updates from the regions', is to promote the provinces periodically and it started last Tuesday with the promotion of Riau, as was told by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hassan Wirajuda.
"This is a periodic program which will be useful not only for Indonesian provinces but also for their regional governments," Wirajuda said on Tuesday. The program was the first endeavor of his ministry to respond to requests from several provinces. "The program also constitutes an effort by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to translate political affinities with parties abroad, where the political affinities could be transformed into trade, economic and business relations," the minister said.
He said Riau was selected to be the first province to be promoted because it was one of the provinces which was more ready than others in Sumatra. "Riau has been very active in carrying out its programs, including activities it has carried out with Indonesian embassies abroad," according to Wirajuda. The readiness of Riau could be seen from the promotional activities that were held in cooperation with the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore for example.
"About 90 percent of the businesspeople invited to the event were present and gave their encouraging appreciation," the minister added. He told that the main target of this regional promotion scheme were countries in ASEAN. "Besides ASEAN nations, investment potentials could also be won from the Middle East nations," he said.
