JAKARTA, 01 May 2007 - The number of foreign tourists arriving in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2007 was recorded at just over one million. That is a rise of over 14 percent from the same period last year when the figure stood at 877,000. The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in March 2007 was 361,800 - an increase by more than 15 percent from March last year, told chairman Rusman Heriawan from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) earlier today.

The number of tourists bringing a visit to the popular resort island of Bali increased significantly during March 2007, by 44 percent compared to the same month last year. February brought 124,900 tourists compared to 123,200 in February 2006. The increase in foreign tourists indicates that the tourism sector in Bali had returned to the level before the terrorist attacks in 2002.

"The number has continued to increase although February and March are not peak-season months. It is important for the economic sector, notably the tourism industry," Rusman said. He also told that the star-rated hotels in ten tourist destinations saw an occupancy of 46.08 percent in February. Star-rated hotels in Bali also saw their occupancy rising from 44.69 percent last January to 48.91 percent over February.
