JAKARTA, 28 February 2007 - The number of victims to the seasonal dengue fever outbreak since last January has reached 380 out of 27,000 infected people. This was announced by the Health Ministry on Tuesday. The head of the Sub Directorate of Arbovirosis, Rita Kriastuti, warned to be cautious for the aedes aegipti mosquito as it's favorable moment to infect people lasts until the end of the wet season.
"The total death until today is 380 out of over 27,000 cases," she told. "We must be cautious, the case will keep increasing in Indonesia as the country is categorized as an endemic area, and the peak (of the attacks) will be until March," said Kriastuti. The government however has taken precautionary measures such as a campaign. This had reduces the number of cases compared to the number of sick people in the beginning of the year. Figures
Earlier this year another official in the sub directorate, Cicilia Widyaningsih said that in January 253 out of 15,788 cases were lethal. In the same period last year that was 188 out of 18,547 cases. In February last year, 168 people died while 15,257 fell ill.
