PONTIANAK, 27 February 2007 - A total number of 65 fishermen from Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam were deported from West Kalimantan today. This was said by a navy officer. "This morning, at 6.45 a.m., the fishermen left Pemangkat harbor, Sambas District, for their respective countries," said commander of the naval base in Pontianak, Lt. Col. Taufik Harun.
The fishermen who were deported had been detained at the naval base for trespassing territorial waters, Taufik said. The foreign fishermen were transported from Pontianak to Pemangkat harbor in the district of Sambas yesterday. They were put on board of the Rejeki Nusantara III which will take them back to their countries under escort of a naval patrol boat. Their journey will take about three days.
Some of the fishermen had been detained by the local authorities for as long as two years. Currently the naval base still detains 23 Vietnamese fishermen. The commander said that his office has sent a letter to the Vietnamese embassy about these men.
