JAKARTA, 25 January 2007 - The USNS Mary Sears` Towed Ping Locater (TPL) was on Wednesday reported to have detected the black box of the missing Adam Air jetliner in waters off the coast of West Sulawesi provinceThe black box was first detected on Tuesday at 8 a.m. local time in waters off the coast of West Sulawesi`s Majene district, at the coordinate points of 03 41 02 southern latitude and 118 08 53 eastern longitude.

But on Wednesday morning, the black box had shifted to a place at the coordinate points of 03 40 22 southern latitude and 118 09 16 eastern longitude in Majene waters at a depth of 1,200 - 2,000 meters below sea level. An officer of the Indonesian Navy`s Base VI in Makassar who was posted aboard the UNSN Mary Sears as a liaison officer, reported the find over communication radio to the naval base`s headquarters here on Wednesday.

The USNS Mary Sears itself was planning to leave Majene waters for Singapore to return the TPL device. Before leaving for Singapore, the Mary Sears would moor at the Makassar naval base here on Wednesday evening to coordinate efforts to recover the black box. Meanwhle, the commander of the Indonesian warship KRI Fatahillah, Lt Col Maman Firmansyah, told ANTARA News by phone that he would coordinate with the Mary Sears and the results of the coordination would be made public on Friday.

Maman said his ship was approaching the USNS Mary Sears in Majene waters to pick up the navy`s liaison officer who was tasked on board the US oceanographic vessel. The commander of a Marine Corps battalion at the Makassar naval base, Major Jayus , said a sophisticated device was needed to pick up the black box from a depth of 1,200 - 2,000 meters under the sea surface.
