JAKARTA, 12 December 2006 - The world's top nuclear regulator said Indonesia qualifies for nuclear energy, saying it is open with its plans, especially compared to Iran. Mohammed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in Jakarta the country has complied with nuclear nonproliferation treaty stipulations.

I don't see that there would be any political impediment to Indonesia acquiring the technology needed for nuclear power, ElBaradei said following a speech at the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology, Gulf Times reports. He said Indonesia has been an open partner with the IAEA, compared to Iran, which hasn't ensured its program is fully clarified.Iran faces U.N. Security Council sanctions for a once secret nuclear program, not answering all of the IAEA's questions on it, and raising suspicions it is heading for nuclear weapons, although Tehran denies that accusation.

Indonesia plans to build numerous reactors on its Muria Peninsula, with the first 1,000 megawatt plant to come online by 2016.
