JAKARTA, 04 October 2006 - A domestic passenger jet skidded off the runway into swampland after landing Tuesday at an airport in central Indonesia, an airport employee said. There were no reports of fatalities or major injuries. Visibility was very poor at Juwata airport in east Kalimantan because of smoke from brush-clearing fires that have delayed flights at other airports in the province in recent days, employee Alfan told el-Shinta radio station from the scene.
The Boeing 737-200 plane came to a stop in swampland around 30 meters (98 feet) off the runway, he and another witness said. One of its engines was some 50 meters (164 feet) from the body of the plane, they said. The plane was operated by local carrier Mandala, but the number of passengers and crew on board was not immediately clear.
In September last year, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Mandala crashed shortly after takeoff on Sumatra island, killing 143 people.
