JAKARTA, 01 August 2006 - Indonesia on Monday called Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon "criminal'' and urged the United Nations to immediately intervene to halt Middle East violence. Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Israel's bombing of the Lebanese town of Qana on Sunday was indiscriminate and violated international humanitarian law.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, joined the international uproar over the attack, which killed at least 56 civilians, most of them women and children. "This indiscriminate Israeli aggression is a gross violation of internationals laws,'' the statement said. "The Indonesian government strongly condemns this criminal act.''
