PANGANDARAN, 24 July 2006 - The death toll from the July 17 earthquake and tsunami in south Java, Indonesia, rose to as many as 650 people, according to Rustam S. Pakaya, head of crisis management at the Health Ministry, said. There are 120 people still missing, while 1,800 were injured and 42,639 are homeless, Pakaya said.

The health ministry is starting measles vaccination today to cover 26 villages in the affected areas on the south coast of West Java, the World Health Organization said in a statement. Fractures, wounds, colds, hypertension and diarrhea, are health problems found among survivors, the report said. Survivors need clean water, blankets, sanitary facilities and breast milk substitutes for babies, according to the Geneva-based WHO.

As much as 20 metric tones of noodles and biscuits have been distributed, mostly in the worst-hit Pangandaran district, according to the United Nations World Food Program. Survivors have enough food for between 10 and 14 days, WFP said in a statement. "Our concern is some refugees are staying in local government offices or schools that are not equipped with enough lavatory facilities and clean water'' which may cause the spread of diseases, Hadi Kuswoyo, spokesman at the Indonesian Red Cross, said in a phone interview today.

Some people are also reluctant to return home because they are still concerned another tsunami may strike, leading to crowding in temporary shelters, Kuswoyo said. The National Disaster Relief Agency, another government department, reported that 628 people died with 62 people still missing. Many survivors have returned to their homes over the weekend, reducing the number of displaced persons to 78,446 from more than 110,000 on July 21, the agency said.

Sulawesi, to the northeast of Java island, was rattled by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake yesterday at 4:22 p.m. local time yesterday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. No casualties or damage were reported from the quake, Fauzi, an official at the Jakarta earthquake center, said in a phone interview today.
