PANGANDARAN, 22 July 2006 - At least 547 people were killed, 465 injured and 323 still missing in the tsunami disaster, triggered by a 6.8 magnitude quake, hitting Indonesia's Java island on Monday, National Disaster Management Coordination Board said here Thursday. An official in charge of the board, Setio Sutarmo, told Xinhua that over 5,541 people had also taken refugee at camps and tents, after giant waves struck onto land and damaged buildings and infrastructure in the southern coastal areas of Indonesia's West Java, Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces.
Indonesia plans to install tsunami early warning system in the waters off southern Java and Bali islands this year, Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said on Thursday. The buoys would be set up in quake-vulnerable zones with high population density and huge amount of assets, he said.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said that the government would update and improve tsunami detector device to give early warnings to people. The president earlier has also warned head of districts across the country whose areas are laid above vulnerable quake areas to be on alert and prepare for possible disaster.
