JAKARTA, 27 June 2006 - Indonesia will likely have a nuclear power plant for electricity within the next five years if the country begins the building of the plant this year, Indonesian Minister of Research and Technology Kusmayanto Kadiman said here on Tuesday. According to the minister, Vice President Jusuf Kalla had instructed to accelerate the supply of electricity to meet the country's strong demand and nuclear energy was thought to be one of the main solutions.

The minister said that currently state-owned electricity company PT. PLN had already signed an agreement with South Korea's Hydro and Nuclear Power Company for establishment of nuclear power plant. "If we begin the building now, so the fastest, within the next five years we will have it (nuclear power plant)," he said. The minister said that Indonesia saw South Korea and Japan as partners in these projects.
