YOGYAKARTA, 20 May 2006 - A spiritual keeper in Indonesia is performing a mystical ritual to calm the 'angry' volcano, Mount Merapi. The volcano has been rumbling for weeks and scientists say it can erupt anytime. Eighty-year-old Maridjan has taken a long and silent walk through the smoke-filled mountain.

Maridjan is the spiritual keeper of Indonesia's most dangerous volcano and he has been praying to calm the angry mount merapi. He started the walk around villages in Cangkringan district, Indonesia after a mass recital of the Koran in a nearby mosque. "This is a 'warning' for all of us. Illegal mining of sand by excavators and their heavy equipment is hurting Mount Merapi," says he.

Maridjan has defied orders by authorities to leave the mountain. He says that the answers that science may not have to the mountain's rage, his prayers would find.
