YOGYAKARTA, 27 April 2006 - Many residents decided to leave as soft volcanic debris has begun pouring a village at the slope of the Merapi Volcano, whose location is in the border areas between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces. The dust rain on Thursday in Ngargomulyo village, Magelang regency, Central Java, changed the attitude of many residents living there, who had been initially reluctant to leave their houses for temporary shelters, Antara news agency reported.
Ngargomulyo village is located five kilometers away from Mount Merapi peak. Thousands of residents living near the volcano have been forcefully evacuated, particularly children, elderly and sick people, to the safe places, following the increasing volcanic activities of Merapi. But there are still many others, who prefer to live in their houses.
Volcanologists at Merapi's monitoring center have said volcanic material at the peak of the mount has continued to increase in volume and a major eruption could take place any day.
