JAKARTA, 14 April 2006 - Indonesia confirms new bird flu case as UN bird flu coordinator recommends against culling of fowls in the country. Indonesia confirmed on Tuesday (April 11) a new case of human bird flu, while UN bird flu co-ordinator David Nabarro said he would not recommend the mass culling of fowls in the country.
The government has resisted the mass culling of fowl seen in some other nations, citing the expense and the impracticality in a country where the keeping of a few chickens or ducks in the backyards of homes is common in cities and on farms.
Nabarro, who is in Jakarta as part of his five-nation trip in Asia, backed Jakarta's resistance in conducting mass culling saying the industry was important for the local economy. "Because of the H5N1 risking the backyard birds, the answer is the back yard birds all have to be culled.
However, will you want to see anybody recommending seriously the culling of these vital elements of local food security, local saving, no you wouldn't, neither would I."
