JAKARTA, 11 April 2006 - The World Health Organization has confirmed Indonesia's 33rd case of bird flu in a 23-year-old poultry worker, the health ministry said. The patient is being treated at the M Djamil hospital in Padang, West Sumatra province, said Hariyadi Wibisono, director general of animal borne disease control.
Results arrived this morning from the WHO-affiliated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States which confirmed earlier local tests, Wibisono told Agence France-Presse. 'He had been in contact with sick chickens at his work place in the Bekasi suburb,' he said.
Local tests for the virus, which are usually accurate, are routinely sent to WHO-affiliated laboratories in Hong Kong or the US for confirmation.
