JAKARTA, 01 April 2006 - A powerful undersea earthquake jolted Indonesia's eastern coast on Saturday, causing panic but no serious damage, officials said. The magnitude 6.1-quake struck at about 5:20am local time some 335 kilometers northeast of Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province, said meteorologist Wijayanto, who goes by only one name.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, sits atop a volcanically active region in the Pacific known as the Ring of Fire and is rocked daily by earthquakes of varying magnitudes. A 9.1-magnitude earthquake on Dec. 26, 2004, off the coast of Sumatra Island triggered a massive tsunami that killed more than 131,000 people in nearby Aceh province.
