JAKARTA, 10 February 2006 - An Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, hospital staff said, citing results from tests carried out by the health ministry. The 22-year-old woman died late yesterday, said spokesman Ilham Patu from the Sulianti Saroso hospital where the patient had been treated. Another woman, 27, who tested positive for bird flu by the health ministry was in critical condition at the hospital, Indonesia's main bird flu treatment center, Patu said.
Samples from the two women have been sent to a Hong Kong laboratory accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) for confirmation. If confirmed, the 22-year-old would be Indonesia's 17th fatality from the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus, based on the WHO count. The WHO has confirmed 23 human cases of bird flu in Indonesia, which have resulted in 16 deaths.
