JAKARTA, 08 February 2006 - The government may review the mining contract of PT Freeport Indonesia, pending the results of an investigation into whether its operations in Papua are causing pollution, The Jakarta Post reported citing Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro.
Yusgiantoro said an interdepartmental probe is following up on a report by the Ministry of Environment which claims Freeport polluted the area in and around its mining concession. Should the charges prove to be true, Freeport would face the risk of losing its mining contract, he said. Gold and copper producer PT Freeport Indonesia is a unit of US mining company Freeport-McMoRan Inc.
