JAKARTA, 04 February 2006 - A World Health Organization reference laboratory in Hong Kong has confirmed four more cases of bird flu in Indonesia, including two fatalities, an Indonesian health official said Saturday. Hariadi Wibisono, a senior Health Ministry official, told Kyodo News that the H5N1 strain of bird flu killed a 22-year-old market vendor in Jakarta and a 15-year-old boy from the West Java town of Padalarang.
The laboratory also confirmed that a 5-year-old boy from Sumatra's Lampung Province and a 5-year-old girl from the West Java town of Indramayu had contracted the virus.
The confirmation raises to 23 the number of confirmed human cases of bird flu in Indonesia, including 16 fatalities. The virulent H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus has killed at least 86 people since late 2003 in six countries -- Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Cambodia and Turkey.
