POSO, 10 January 2006 - There has been an explosion near a church in the religiously divided Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi. Police say the blast in Poso caused no casualties or damage. Shortly afterwards, a fire damaged four government buildings in the city of Poso, however, police are unsure if the blaze was related to the explosion.
About 1,000 extra troops and police were sent to Central Sulawesi in November after violence between Christian and Muslim groups escalated. On December 31, seven people were killed when a bomb exploded at a market where a stall was selling pork, which is forbidden for Muslims.
In October, three Christian schoolgirls were beheaded by masked assailants. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world, but Christians and Muslims live in roughly equal numbers in Sulawesi.
