JAKARTA, 02 December 2005 - Foreign tourist arrivals to Bali fell 48.4 pct in October compared to the preceding month in the wake of suicide bombings there, official figures showed. The number of foreign visitors to Bali in October stood at 86,800, down from September's 168,200, according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics. 'The drop is directly related to the Bali bombings II on Oct 1, 2005,' the bureau said in a release posted on its website.
Twenty people and the three suicide bombers were killed when the explosions they detonated tore through three popular eateries in two separate resort areas in southern Bali on Oct 1. The attack occurred as tourism, the main engine of Bali's economy, had just recovered after a series of blasts in Oct 2002 that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.
In the ten months to October, the number of foreigners visiting Indonesia overall dropped to 3.5 mln, or 7.8 pct year-on-year, the statistics bureau said.
