MEDAN, 27 July 2005 - At least nine people died and 23 others injured when a train rammed into a passenger bus in Indonesia's North Sumatra province, reports said Monday. The accident took place early Sunday when the train rammed into an inter-city bus at a railway crossing in Asahan district, about 1,450 km northwest of here, the Jakarta Post reported.
Eyewitnesses said the bus driver crossed the railway tracks, as there was no signal of an oncoming train. "Most of the victims perished after being thrown out of the bus when the train rammed into it," Asahan police commissioner Mahfud Arifin was quoted as saying.
