JAKARTA, 20 July 2005 - Indonesia has recorded its first human death linked to bird flu after tests confirmed that a man who died earlier this month had the virus.

Indonesia said last week that it suspected the deadly H-5-N-1 strain of the bird flu virus in the deaths of a man and his two daughters. Blood and other samples were sent to Hong Kong for further testing. The health minister says results for the father came back positive, but made no mention of his two children. Bird flu has swept through poultry populations in large swaths of Asia since 2003.

Tens of millions of chickens have either died or been slaughtered, while bird flu has killed 38 people in Vietnam, 12 in Thailand and four in Cambodia.
