JAKARTA, 02 December 2004 - Indonesia's largest Muslim group Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) concluded the chairmanship election Thursday with incumbent Hasyim Muzadi won voting in landslide. Muzadi, a running mate of Megawati Soekarnoputri in her unsuccessful bid for presidency, won 346-99 over Masdar Mas'udi, who was backed by NU patron chief Abdurrahman Wahid, in a voting held in the Central Java town of Boyolali, reported Detikcom online news service.
The chairmanship election was the last agenda of the six-day NUconvention. Vice President Jusuf Kalla was present at the meeting venue to officially close the event. NU is estimated to have 40 million followers, making it the largest Muslim group in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
