JAKARTA, 27 July 2004 - Indonesia will build a new port in Jakarta with an investment of US$500 million (Rp4.5 trillion) using Japanese technology. Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso said Jakarta's old port, Tanjung Priok, has not been expanded after 150 years in operation and is no longer efficient. The new port, called Jakarta New Port, will facilitate exports and imports via Jakarta, the governor said after inaugurating the start of construction on Monday.
Meanwhile, general chairman of the Indonesian National Ship Owners Association, Oentoro Surya, said a consortium of Indonesian and Japanese companies will build 15 terminals in its 5.2 kilometer-long quay. Surya said the port is expected to be able to accommodate container ships of Generation IX with a carrying capacity of 9,500 twenty-foot equivalent units and that it could serve as an international hub port or transshipment port in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The first phase of the project, including construction of a 600 meter-long quay for a car and passenger terminal, will be finished in 2006, but the entire project is expected to be completed in 2010.
