BANDA ACEH, 21 May 2003 - A top Indonesian general says the military may soon impose a curfew across parts of war-torn Aceh province, where a major offensive is underway against separatist rebels.
Aceh military commander General Endang Suwarya told reporters that authorities are considering a night curfew in the districts of Bireun and Pidie, where the rebel Free Aceh Movement is very active.
General Suwarya said Indonesian troops are moving into the two districts Wednesday during the third day of a new Indonesian military assault in Aceh. He did not elaborate. Jakarta says the military has killed at least 12 rebels and arrested many more since the offensive began Monday. Indonesian officials also said at least 180 schools in the province have been burned down. Both sides have blamed the other for the destruction.
The military offensive brought a formal end to a December ceasefire, which each side accused the other of violating.
